Spot groups, verification, and priority rules in rankings
Curated Spot Rankings not only differentiate based on how well a location performs according to its ranking points. Before the actual sorting, each location is assigned to a clearly defined group. The key factors are the association with a business, the verification status, the rating, the number of reviews, and, if applicable, an editorial spotlight selection.
This page explains the differences between Spotlight, Verifizierte Top-Ranglisten-Spots, Verifizierte kuratierte Spots, Kuratierte Spots and Orte. It also describes the prerequisites for each group, how locations transition between them, and the impact of group priority on the final order of a ranking.
The group rules complement the general ranking methodology of Curated Spot. Two levels must be distinguished: The group priority determines which group appears first; the ranking points then determine the order within the same group.
Priority of ranking groups
Every location displayed in a suitable Curated Spot Ranking belongs to one of five groups. The following priority order applies to the display:
| Priority | Group | Prerequisites |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Spotlight | The location is associated with a business and has been editorially selected as a Spotlight for the respective ranking. |
| 2 | Verifizierte Top-Ranglisten-Spots | The location is associated with a business, is Verified, has a rating of at least 4.8, and at least 50 reviews. |
| 3 | Verifizierte kuratierte Spots | The location is associated with a business and Verified but currently does not meet both prerequisites for Verified Top Ranked Spots. |
| 4 | Kuratierte Spots | The location is associated with a business but is currently not Verified. |
| 5 | Orte | The location is not associated with any business. |
Which locations can become Spotlight?
Basically, any suitable location linked to a company can be selected as Spotlight. Its natural group can previously be Curated Spots, Verified Curated Spots, or Verified Top Ranked Spots.
What happens when Spotlight is removed?
If the Spotlight designation is removed, the location automatically returns to the group that corresponds to its current actual status.
Depending on the existing conditions, this can be Verified Top Ranked Spots, Verified Curated Spots, or Curated Spots. Removing Spotlight does not automatically remove the location from Curated Spot, and its ranking points are not automatically reset as a result.
Verifizierte Top-Ranglisten-Spots
Verifizierte Top-Ranglisten-Spots are locations associated with a company and verified, which additionally meet certain requirements for rating and review volume.
To belong to this group, all of the following conditions must be met:
- the location is associated with a company;
- the location has Verified status;
- the rating is at least 4,8;
- es liegen mindestens 50 Bewertungen vor.
The two thresholds for rating and number of reviews apply simultaneously. It is not sufficient to meet only one of the two values.
Verified Top Ranked Spot does not automatically mean rank #1.
The designation of this group is not equivalent to a guarantee for the first place in a ranking.
Multiple locations can simultaneously belong to Verified Top Ranked Spots. Within this group, ranking points determine the order of locations.
Can a location leave this group again?
Yes. Group membership depends on the current status. If one of the required conditions is no longer met, the location returns to the group for which it currently qualifies. If it remains linked to a company and Verified, it is usually Verified Curated Spots.
Verifizierte kuratierte Spots
Verifizierte kuratierte Spots are locations that are linked to a company and Verified but currently do not meet both additional requirements for Verified Top Ranked Spots.
A location can, for example, fall into this group if:
- its rating is below 4.8;
- fewer than 50 reviews are available;
- or both requirements are not met.
Being Verified and qualifying for Verified Top Ranked Spots are two different matters. Verification assigns a suitable location to the verified level of Curated Spot. Only the additional rating and review thresholds determine whether it falls into the higher-priority group Verified Top Ranked Spots.
If a Verified Curated Spot later meets both thresholds, it can switch to Verified Top Ranked Spots.
Kuratierte Spots
Kuratierte Spots are locations that are already linked to a company but currently do not have Verified status.
The company linkage is the defining feature that distinguishes a Curated Spot from a regular Spot.
Once a location is assigned to a business, it moves from Spots to Curated Spots, unless it meets the criteria of a higher-priority group.
After successful verification, a Curated Spot can transition to Verified Curated Spots. If it subsequently meets the thresholds of at least a 4.8 rating and at least 50 reviews, it can move to Verified Top Ranked Spots.
A Curated Spot can also be editorially selected as a Spotlight for an appropriate ranking.
Orte
Orte are locations that are currently not assigned to any business.
On a data level, this usually means that no valid business_id is present.
The business association is a prerequisite for all higher-priority groups. A location without a business association therefore remains in Spots, even if older or inconsistent metadata still contains a Verified status or a previous Spotlight designation.
Historical metadata thus does not take precedence over a missing business association.
What happens when a location is disassociated from a business?
If a location is disassociated from its previously linked business, it automatically falls back into the Spots group.
If a business is reassigned later, the appropriate group can be re-determined based on the then-current status.
Transition between groups
The regular progression can be represented as follows:
- Ort — the location is not assigned to any business.
- Kuratierter Spot — the location is linked to a business.
- Verifizierter kuratierter Ort — the linked location receives Verified status.
- Verifizierter top-bewerteter Ort — the Verified location additionally achieves at least a 4.8 rating and at least 50 reviews.
Independently of this progression, an eligible location linked to a business can be editorially selected as a Spotlight Spotlight for a specific ranking.
The group assignment is dynamic. If the underlying conditions change, a location can automatically return to the group that corresponds to its current status.
Impact of group priority on the order
Curated Spot uses two separate layers for sorting:
- The group priority determines the order in which the individual groups are displayed.
- The ranking points determine the order of locations within the same group.
Ranking points cannot override the group hierarchy.
Example
| Location | Group | Ranking-Punkte | Relative Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standort A | Kuratierter Spot | 10 | Höher |
| Standort B | Ort | 1.000 | Niedriger |
Verifizierung garantiert keine bestimmte Ranking-Position
Hohe Punktzahlen ersetzen keine Gruppenanforderungen
Bedeutet Verified Top Ranked Spot automatisch Platz #1?
Nein.
Was bedeutet Spotlight bei Curated Spot?
